Counselling

Coming to counselling as an individual, couple or family, regardless who attends, we know life’s ups and downs are often connected to relationships – the dynamics between us, the hopes and hurts, the things we lose sleep over . . .

Parent Consulting

The most significant impact on a child’s wellbeing is the parent-child relationship. Supporting parents to be the answer to their children’s needs offers hope for prevention and lasting change with most childhood problems. Supporting parents also offers the best chance for helping our children through these unprecedented times.

Courses and Workshops

For your small or large group, Michele is a seasoned presenter with parents, educators and helping professionals. Michele is on Faculty with the Neufeld Institute, with over 20 courses available.

Hello! I’m Michele

Registered Marriage and Family Therapist, RCC and RSW
Thank you for taking your time to visit my practice website. I know you have options, and I am happy to share a little about myself, to support your decision making. I started working with youth and families from the start of my career, in 1987 and have benefitted from working with people in a range of settings since. I have always maintained an interest in family relationships, leading to my graduate studies in Couple and Family Therapy. Following graduate school, I married and started my own huge learning as a parent. During our parenting journey, I began studying with Dr. Gordon Neufeld, culminating in my appointment to Faculty with the Neufeld Institute.  Your dreams, your family, and your future are important to you. I would value the opportunity to work with you on what matters most to you. Call, text or book directly. I look forward to speaking with you.

My Expertise

Relationships and Parenting

Whether you’re a recently formed couple, just beginning your parenting journey, “in the thick of it” or even juggling the changes of parenting adult children, you’re invested in relationships, with your significant other and your children. Let me help you protect and grow your investment.

Preparing for Parenthood

The time before, during, and for a year or so after expecting a baby is often emotional and brings to the surface some of the best and most vulnerable parts of ourselves. Whether you’re facing fertility or relationship concerns, or any of the common challenges at this stage of family life, talking with Michele can smooth out some of the bumps and set the course for a satisfying journey through it all.

Parenting in the Early Years

Many parents discover, sometime around their children’s preschool years, that finding balance between personal, couple and parenting time has become quite challenging. Mastering the dance between spouses is key to a long and fulfilling family life, and in case it wasn’t tricky enough, couples are figuring it out with children underfoot. I know it can be hard. Let me help you with that.

1st Session!

My Approach

I strive to understand people and relationships from the inside-out. My practice is to help you also understand yourself and others, thus providing you the insight and freedom to make decisions that reflect your authentic wishes and intentions. I support you to strengthen and restore relationships, even with yourself, and incorporate the best of developmental science and the science of emotion and relationships. Even though we may be “older” many of us are still working through aspects of our own development; a lifelong project toward becoming the the best version of our true self. When we can make sense of ourselves and others, we unlock the “eyes” to see each other and can then respond with compassion to our own and our loved ones’ needs. I put my heart and mind into working with you, and this work is a pleasure and a privilege. You are welcome to ask me more about my approach when we meet.

Reconnecting with Youth

Many youth have become distant from the parents, educators and other adults who care about them. How do we understand and respond to what’s happening and what’s needed? Read Michele’s article in the BC Association for Clinical Counsellors’ Winter 2020 edition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you seeing people in person?

Yes! I’m in the office part of the week. I’ll expand my in-person hours as more people want that option. If you would like to meet by Zoom or by phone, that’s also available and will remain an option for as long as you like.

Do I have to wear a mask?

Thanks for checking. Masks are once again requested when arriving and departing the building (I share the building with a medical office). They are welcome but not required during sessions. I have taken precautions advised by WorkSafeBC to ensure your safety and mine while meeting. Please feel free to ask more about the safety measures being practiced.

I want to do couples counselling but my partner does not want to come. Can we still do couples work?

Though I welcome both members of a couple to join in an appointment, sometimes only one person is ready or able to attend. Even with only one person, we can do a lot of excellent work, and if it works later on, both people can join in. It’s pretty common, and I’m happy to work with you either way.

My child has been having problems. Should I bring them to see you?

It’s understandable that when you are worried about your child, it seems important for them to come to the appointment. We can talk about this in our first appointment. Sometimes I meet with children. You know your family best. Parent consulting is an effective approach to helping children. It restores you as the parent in the driver’s seat with your child, and strengthens the most important key to your child’s emotional health and wellbeing – their relationship with a caring adult.

Can our infant attend the appointment with us?

Babies who are not yet mobile are welcome to attend with their parent(s).

Do you offer any options for those on a budget?

Absolutely! I want to work with you and your needs. I am happy to schedule appointments less frequently, offer things you can do independently between appointments, or recommend other sources for learning, such as courses or reading. I will gladly discuss your needs and wishes to keep within your budget.
